Abstract

16,487. Legge, J. St. C. July 29. Acetylene.-Relates to automatic generating- apparatus in which there is.intermittent contact of the carbide with the water. The generator consists of an outer casing B, within which is a shell B<1> open at the bottom but closed at the top by a gastight cover B<3>, Within this shell is removably attached, by means of bayonet joints, a carbide holder B<2> open at the top, and perforated with holes b<1> around its sides. The carbide holder has a central tube fitting over a gas outlet tube C. The generator is covered by a lid R having a safetyvalve S. Water is admitted from the gas-holder tank A by a tube E to either one of the two generators, one only being shown in the Figure, and, passing up the generator, enters the carbide holder through the perforations. The acetylene passes through the tube C to a cooler D fixed within the gas holder, and thence by a tube D<1> to a purifier L, which is partly filled with acid for .removing ammonia, and has a reticulated tray l containing caustic soda or potash and a top layer of calcium chloride or other purifying-material. The gas then passes by a tube L<1> to the gas bell A'. The bell is provided with a number of external vertical guide-tubes H passing over guide-rods H<1> fixed to the tank A. Adjustably attached to the tubes H are arms or rods J which, as the bell rises and falls, operate the bifurcated levers G to close or open valves regulating the supply of gas to the holder. The bell being in its raised position, and the valve therefore shut, the pressure in the generator increases, thereby driving the water away from the carbide, and thus stopping the generation of gas until the bell again falls. Pipes K, C' place the top of the generator casing B in connection with the pipe C, to maintain an equilibrium of pressure on the surface of the water inside and outside the carbide basket.
