15,901. Pollock, J. July 21. Polishing.-Relates to a process and machinery for polishing wood, marble, metal, &c. Polish or varnish is applied by a spraying-device, worked by compressed air, or by revolving brushes, or felt rollers supplied from tanks. The coated surfaces are then rubbed and polished by rubbers or pads of felt or brushes &c., and ground glass or other suitable material moistened with water or oil. Fig. 2 shows a plan of a machine with reciprocating rubbers K worked by an adjustable-throw crank B over the faces of panels J. These are placed upon a table O<1>, mounted on rollers, and moved to and fro in a direction at right-angles to the rubbers by an adjustable-throw crank H. The rubbers each consist of three bars of flexible hard wood, to which are secured rectangular sections of felt or brushes &c. Fig. 5 shows a machine applicable for the treatment of small flat surfaces, irregular shapes, and mouldings. It comprises a disc P and a roller Q covered with felt, brushes, &c., and driven in the manner shown. The disc may be driven from above, and be mounted eccentrically on its spindle. For smoothing wood preparatory to applying the varnish, glass paper is used on the disc and roller.
