Abstract

13,498. Musgrave, W. M. June 17. Compound engines.-Relates to the general arrangement of vertical compound engines, and to apparatus for automatic forced lubrication of the same. Fig. 4 shows a longitudinal section, and Fig. 5 a transverse vertical section, of one form of the invention. Upon a base or foundation plate R formed with an oil well f is mounted an enclosed framework S carrying the slide-bars and supporting the cylinders. Of these there are two, with the valve-chests placed outside so as to bring the cylinders close together. In the oil well f is disposed the oil pump h, which is actuated by an eccentric on the crank shaft. The oil is forced through the pipe r to the pipes v connected to the caps of the crankshaft bearings. Through the coupling x and chamber m<2> it is also forced into the jointed swinging pipes h<2> connected to the crosshead pin. Thence it is supplied to the crank-pin by the pipes z. In place of the jointed pipes, passages may be provided in the slide bars from which the oil is caused to reach the crosshead pin through a port and ducts in the crosshead. Drip-pipes v' are provided for lubricating the eccentrics. Dripping points enclosed by covers d are also provided for preventing the oil from passing along the crank shaft to the outside of the casing.
