Abstract

12,056. Wight, W. D., and Wild, M. B. May 27. Valve gear; valves, expansion.-Relates to improvements in the type of valves and valve gear described in Specification No. 12,496, A.D. 1895. In that gear the cut-off or expansion slides are actuated from the spindle of the main valve through the medium of trip or clip gear, which releases the valve and allows it to close under the influence of steam pressure, or of a spring, at a point in the stroke determined by the engine governor. Fig. 2 shows a sectional plan through the valve-chest at one end of the cylinder C, and Fig. 1 a side elevation of the same. P is the admission passage, O<c> the exhaust outlet, and B a balance plate at the back of the main valve. Instead of the trip gear being arranged between the main and cut-off valve spindles, it is according to the present invention arranged upon the m a i n spindle. As before, it consists of a toggle joint f, e for each cut-off valve q, which, when straight, causes the main and cut-off valves to move together. But the toggles are in this invention pushed out of the straight so as to permit the cut-off valves to close by means of tails n, n<1>, which come in contact with certain stops at o, o' adjusted in position by the governor. The opening of the cut-off valves is effected by stops l, l. The toggle-joints may be arranged together, or they may be separated and disposed at opposite ends of the cylinder. The cut-off valve q is made so as to open several ports simultaneously on the admission side of the main valve.
