Starting - engines. -Relates to a reversing-engine comprising two cylinders, one of which works with compressed air orsteam, and effects the reversing operation proper, whilst the other works with water, and effects a quiet reversing, in order to prevent knocking off the reversing-link. Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section of the two cylinders, connected together, fixed to the condenser of the main steam engine or other convenient place. Fig. 2 shows an elevation of the slide-valve arrangement, and the mechanism for operating the same. The upper cylinder A is the air or steam cylinder, and is connected to the lower and hydraulic cylinder through the common piston-rod a. Two slide valves, a working valve b, and a valve c, which serves to produce a cushion for receiving the impact of the piston, are enclosed in the valve-chest c, and may be actuated by a single rod, or separately by two valve rods. As shown in Fig. 2, both valves move with the same stroke, and are operated at the same time by means of the hand-lever d. In an alternative arrangement, both valves are connected as shown and operated by a common slide-valve rod. The hydraulic cylinder B has the three-way cock f <3> and cocks o above and below, and according to the position of one of the latter cocks a quick or slow reversal takes place. The hydraulic cylinder may be used alone as a reversing-cylinder. The common piston-rod a is connected by means of a crosshead and a connecting-rod with the reversing-lever, and so produces a movement of the reversing-link.
