Abstract

8675. Graetz, A. April 13. Acetylene.-The carbide for generating acetylene is contained in small receptacles H, arranged at different levels in a vessel A containing water and into which the hell B dips. The carbide in each receptacle is operated upon in order as the water rises, the inlet of water being governed by the rise and fall of the gasometer. The top of the bell is provided with a dome, within which is a doubleacting spring valve E, which, when the bell is held down by bands G, allows gas to pass through to the tube U, and thence to the gasometer, but, when the bell is released, shuts the opening to the tube C, and opens that to the atmosphere. When the bell is raised, a chain attached thereto opens a valve T<1> which allows the water to escape through a tube T and siphon. The bell of the gasometer is connected t) a lever 0, which is joined to a valve above a discharge opening K in the water-supply tank J. By this arrangement, water is allowed to now from the tank only when the gasometer hell falls. A siphon arrangement M, N ensures a sufficient amount of water passing each time to entirely cover one carbide receptacle. Two generating- vessels A are used alternately, the water supply being automatically cut off from the exhausted vessel and directed to the newly-charged vessel. This is accomplished by the water overflowing from the top of the exhausted vessel into a small vessel carried by a chain passing over a pulley, and attached to a lever which moves the discharge spout of the water supply from one to the other generator. As each ascent.and descent of the bell of the gasometer corresponds to one of the small vessels H becoming exhausted, a dial is attached to the bell, and the indicator of the dial caused to move forward one division for each complete double movement. The gas is washed in a special washer, consisting of two communicating-chambers. To cause the water supply to be more sensitive, it may be operated from a small auxiliary gas holder supplied with gas by a branch from the main gas pipe. A safety escape device is attached to the gasometer bell in case of an excessive accumulation of gas.
