Abstract

3269. Bailey, W. O. Feb. 9. Bevelling; surfacing and polishing.-Relates to apparatus for bevelling glass, and also to grinding, cutting, and polishing apparatus generally. The grinding-wheel consists of a lead or other soft metal ring b secured to a cast-iron plate a<4> which is bolted to a boss a<5>. The shaft z is screwed in opposite directions for the boss a<5> and tightening- nut z<1> respectively. Abrading-material such as emery or sand is applied to the wheel by a revolving brush (not shown), which is itself supplied from a cylindrical chamber c of which one end is shown in section in Fig. 10. Abrading- material is fed into the chamber c at one end from a hopper f, Fig. 7. A revolving carrier f<1> or a reciprocating grid regulates the discharge from the hopper. A ring of jets g helps to wash the material down. Water is introduced into the chamber c at c<6> near the discharge holes c<4>. The abrading-material is carried along the chamber c to the holes c<4> by stirrers c' on a revolving shaft c'. A brush i may also be mounted on the shaft c<1> so as to clear the holes c<4>. The brush supplying the grinding-wheel passes over the holes c<4>, and also operates a tapper for assisting in clearing the holes and in feeding the material from the hopper. The stuffing-box c<5> for the shaft c' is made with a narrow ridge k<1> and an annular space k which is supplied with water, air, or other fluid under a pressure sufficient to prevent the entrance of grit.
