Abstract

1400. Newton, H. E., [Hoe, R.]. Jan. 18. Rotary machines.-(1) Web-feeding and controlling apparatus, Figs. 1 and 4. The web W passes from the roll R to the first printing and impression cylinders. On a shaft 17 geared to the impression cylinder by a wheel 23 is an expanding pulley P, which drives a band B passing round a pulley D in arms 15 pivoted at 17. By expanding or contracting the pulley P, the band B may be caused to drive or retard the roll R to regulate the feed and tension of the web, and to accelerate its movement in starting &c. The pulley P may be of any suitable construction, having hand-operated controlling-arrangements. As shown, Fig. 4, it is formed of four sections 1, 2, 3, 4 expanded or contracted bya tapering piece C fixed on the shaft 17. Dovetail sliding parts 9, 10, 11, 12 connect the sections 1, 2, 3, 4 and piece C. The sections are moved longitudinally by a screw and hand-wheel &c. (2) Relates to means for associating supplement sheets from a slowly-moving web with the more rapidly-moving main web, and consists more particularly of a compensator for securing the register of the main and supplement sheets. In Fig. 1<a>, M represents the main web which passes to the nipping-rollers 39. The supplement web W passes from the printing-mechanism T<1>, I<1> between cutting-cylinders 40 and along the pathway formed by tapes 42, 43 to the nipping-rollers 39. The tapes 42, 43 and rollers 39 are driven at the same speed as the main web. The sheets pass between cylinders 51, 52 by which they are cut, collected, and delivered to the longitudinal folder L. The compensator for securing the register of the supplement sheets with the main sheets consists of an adjustable roller c by which the length of the path of the web W is varied. The roller c is carried by arms 63 of a shaft 64, on which is a third arm adjustable in position by means of two screws.
