Abstract

1020. Stearn, C. H. Jan. 13. Yarns and threads.-A solution of cellulose, obtained in the manner described in Specification No. 8700, A.D. 1892, is squirted into a suitable precipitating-solution such as alcohol, brine, ammonium sulphate, &c., but preferably into a solution of ammonium chloride of specific gravity 1050 to 1060. The filaments should remain for twelve hours in fresh ammonium chloride, after which they are introduced for a few minutes into a boiling solution of the same liquid and washed. Several threads may be produced simultaneously, and these may be twisted together to form a compound yarn or thread. For obtaining a perfectly-homogeneous solution of cellulose, the purest bleached cellulose is mercerized, and, after the excess of alkali has been squeezed out, it is treated with carbon bisulphide. To the resulting product sufficient water is added to make a solution containing 9¢ to 10 per cent. of cellulose. The mixture is then stirred for a considerable time by means of a mixer revolving at a high speed, the material being kept cool during the stirring. The mixture must then be filtered and freed from air by the air pump. The resulting cellulose is purified in any suitable way, such as by immersion in a hot solution of sodium carbonate, washing, treating with sodium hypochlorite, and afterwards with dilute acids. The yarns and threads may be made into fabrics.
