Abstract

796. Higbee, C. A. Jan. 11. Spigot-and-socket joints.-The spigot and socket are tapered and have corresponding screw threads cut on them. The edges of the threads are cut away, so that, after screwing up tightly, the metal is pressed aside and the spaces between the threads are completely filled up. In the case shown, the spigot is tapered more than the socket, so that the final form of the joint is as shown in Fig. 2, where the spaces between the threads at the outer end of the socket are filled up more completely than elsewhere. The pipe ends may, however, be variously tapered, or one of them may be cylindrical.
