Abstract

29,082. Sisson, W. Dec. 8. Centrifugal governors.-Relates to engines of the kind described in Specification No. 16,459, A.D. 1896, in which a weight is made to serve the two-fold purpose of a crank balance or counterweight and a governor weight. The present invention consists (1) in neutralizing at low speeds the effect of gravity upon the weight owing to which the action of the governor is rendered uneven, and (2) enabling the regulation of the engine to be effected by varying the point of cut-off when running under heavy loads, while yet the engine is governed by throttling the steam supply when the load is light. Figs. 1 and 2 show front and side elevations of an example of the improved governor, the latter partly in section. In these, 1 is the crank shaft, 2 the crank-pin, and 3 the crank web to which is attached a frame 3<a>. The governor weights 4, 4<a> are carried by arms pivoted in the frame and connected to the eccentric sheave 7. They are also connected to a cross-bar 10 acted on by springs 12. The crossbar in turn is connected by a rod 13 passing through the crank web to a lever 17 from which, through the medium of a rod 14, motion is communicated to the throttle valve. The intermediate rods are furnished with means for adjustment. The throttle valve is made in the form of a ported sleeve working in a casing with ports large enough and so placed that it comes into operation only with light loads and an early cut-off. The disposition of the weights is such that under centrifuga action they move in opposite directions, compressing both springs, but under gravity they move in the same direction, compressing one spring and easing the other and leaving the centre of the crossbar 10 unmoved.
