Abstract

24,085. Barker, G., [Rissmuller, L.]. Oct. 19. Manures and fertilizers; refuse, treating.-Relates to a process and apparatus for treating city garbage, animal or vegetable waste matters, &c. so as to separate greases, produce fertilizers, and utilize the gases evolved during the treatment. The garbage &c. is fed into a digester 5, which is then closed and supplied with steam through pipes 7, 8 ; the garbage &c. may be treated with sulphuric or other acid before being steamed. The gases and vapours given off by the garbage &c. flow along a pipe 9 and through a condenser 10. Water of condensation is carried away by a pipe 11 to the sewer or other channel, while the uncondensed gases flow along a pipe 12 past a fire 14 and through a flue 15 and regenerator 17 arranged beneath the steam generator 16. When the garbage &c. has been sufficiently heated, it is run past a valve 20 into a measuring-chamber 22, whence it is fed into a centrifugal separator by means of a screw 23. The separator may be of the kind described in Specification No. 24,084, A.D. 1897, comprising an upper and a lower section 26, 27, provided with pipes 31 for withdrawing separated grease, and with a hand-lever 30 and connections for lifting the upper section 26 so as to form an annular discharge opening to allow the non-greasy parts to fall into a dryer 37. This dryer is heated by means of steam pipes 46, 47, and is fitted with stirring- appliances. The dried material is screened, and the coarse portions are ground, the whole being used as manure.
