Wheels with air-compressing appliances.-Means for automatically inflating pneumatic tyres by the rotation of the wheel are shown in under-plan and section in Figs. 2 and 3 respectively. Attached to a spoke a<2> are two bent spring levers e which are compressed together at each passage between the limbs b of the fork. Each lever is directly connected to bellows d, which on expanding, draw air from the atmosphere through the filter c<6>, non-return valve c<5>, and air passages e<4>, d<5x>, and on contracting, force it through these air passages, non-return valve c<7>, and ordinary inflating-valve a<3> into the tyre a<1>. A safety-valve, which may have an alarm, is attached to the tyre, and the limbs b of the fork may have antifriction attachments b<1>. The normal distance apart of the levers e is adjustable by means of the brackets f and set-screws e<3>, and the levers may be compressed, by means of the sliding ring g, to such an extent as to throw the arrangement out of action. Or only one lever e may be employed, and it may be operated vertically instead of horizontally by a projection on one limb of the fork. The position of this projection may be adjusted by means of a lever pivoted to the handle-bar, so that the arrangement can be thrown out of action. The bellows may be replaced by a simple compressible air chamber.
