Abstract

19,522. Hilgartner, G. H., and Walker, W. H. Aug. 24. Cigarette - making machines.-Fig. 3 shows a section of the machine with the tobaccof e e d i n g and cigaretterolling and cutting devices. Fig. 10 shows the rolling - device in action, and Fig. 17 the paper feeding, pasting, cutting, and holding arrangements : in Fig. 21 the fingers which hold and transfer the paper are shown in greater detail. The tobacco is carried by the feed-belt 10 to the picking-rollers 26, 31, and thence by the belt 10<a> beneath the compressing-belt 25. The knife 33 cuts off the quantity required for one cigarette, and delivers it to the rolling-apron 35. By means of a reciprocating carriage 67, Fig. 10, which bears the rolling-head 73, the tobacco is rolled in a piece of paper previously pasted, cut off, and transferred to the apron. The rolling-head is provided at the ends with plungers which slightly compress the tobacco during the operation of rolling. The cigarette is discharged into the recess 82 in the roller 83, and by means of a reciprocating rack this roller is turned sufficiently to trim the ends of the cigarette between the rotary cutters 96. It is then discharged to conveying - belts which transfer it to a receptacle placed in a convenient position for removal by the attendant. The paper 147 is fed from the roll 156 by feed-rollers 161, 165. These rollers are cut away for a part of their circumference so as to stop the paper during the time that the cam-actuated paste roll 176 is being brought down-upon its edge. A finger 179 holds the paper down during this time. The paper strip is then fed onwards, and the pasted portion is cut off by cam-actuated spring shears and transferred by fingers 144, 145 mounted upon a carriage 120 sliding on the bed 117 to the rolling-apron. The carriage is reciprocated by means of the cam 130, friction-roller 129, arm 127, and pitman 125. The fingers 144, 145 are opened and closed by means of an arm 150 and guide 151 acting in turn on the friction-roller 134, Fig. 21. By means of detents 135, 136, of which the former is integral with the arm 132 of the finger 145, and the latter is mounted on a spring-controlled arm 137, the fingers are held alternately securely closed and fully open. The machine is described in great detail in the Specification.
