Abstract

18,587. Nitsche, H., and Kausmann, P. Aug. 10. Bicycles of the drop-frame type are made with a low frame as shown, so that the rider can stand with a foot on each side of the machine, thereby adapting it for sporting and military purposes and for riding among traffic. Sufficient reach for driving is obtained by placing the saddle f well behind the crank axle. The wheels A and B are not more than 16 to 20 inches in diameter, the driving chain-wheel C being correspondingly enlarged to give a gear of 68. The position the saddle should occupy is given by the intersection of an arc with centre at the crank axle and of radius equal to the length of the leg minus the throw of the crank with a horizontal line the height of which equals the length of leg.
