Fig. 1 shows a side elevation, in which A is the rack frame on which the type bed is mounted. There are two racks B, B' which are placed one a little to one side of the other, so that the driving-wheel C may be put into gear with either, and out of gear with the other, by moving its shaft C<1> longitudinally. At each end of the racks, and out of line therewith laterally, is a toothed sector S. S', with which gears a pinion E fixed eccentrically to one side of the wheel C. On the wheel E is fixed a roller b<1>, which engages one of the guide-ribs D or D<1> while the wheel E is in gear with the corresponding sector S or S'. On the side of the wheel C is also fixed a cam c which engages a roller d or d<1> on the sector S, S<1>, or bed frame A, to keep the pinion in gear with the sector. When the bed nears the end of its movement in either direction, the wheel C passes out of gear with the racks, and the wheel E engages the sector S or S<1>, and the roller b<1> the guide D or D'. These operate to gradually stop the bed and re-start it in the opposite direction. During this operation the shaft C' is moved, to bring the wheel C into position to gear with the other rack, by the lever G and cam H. In a modification, the racks are in the same vertical plane, and the shaft C' is carried by a swinging lever frame operated by a cam &c. to raise and lower the wheel C to engage the racks alternately.
