Abstract
16,829. Broadbent, J. K. July 16. Steam-generator &c. furnaces; firebars and grates; ashpits; arches; smoke-consuming.-Relates to furnaces adapted for burning inferior fuel and small coal. Transverse rocking firebars A are employed. Each bar is in the form of a grid and is carried by end pivots in a line with the back edge of the bar. By means of depending levers and the connecting-rod F the bars may be simultaneously actuated from the front, being raised slowly and dropped suddenly. The unconsumed residue of the fuel is worked by the motion of the grate into the chamber J, which, as shown in Fig. 1, is constructed with a perforated hearth through which steam may be blown. An arch M in contact with the boiler plates is provided, which, becoming highly heated, promotes complete combustion. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the ash space J is formed between the end of the grate and the bridge L, the ashes &c. being removed through the door 0. In each case, accessories such as steam pokers and blowers, automaticallyactuated louvres, &c. may be employed.
