Abstract

15,746. Harvey, C. July 2. Jointing tools and apparatus.-Relates to the machinery or appliances to be used in the making of joints of cycles and like framings and for uniting lengths of tubing, such joints being of the type described in Specification No. 24,013, A.D. 1896. The bed a of the machine is provided with a longitudinal gap, and by means of the fast and loose pulleys, spur-wheels a<7>, b, and a connecting-rod c motion may be transferred from the shafting to a rack e working within suitable guides. The teeth of the rack e gear with teeth formed on a rotatable sleeve f, Fig. 6, carried in a bearing f<3>, and in this sleeve is carried a rest i adapted to receive the tube h<1>. The sleeve, bearing, and rest are gapped to allow the tube to be inserted, and the rest is provided near the ends with hinged covers to keep the tube in place. The frame may be clamped to the adjustable table g. The sleeve f carries a hollow boss within which is a spindle having a crank upon the end free to turn slightly in the recess j<4> so as to adjust the height of the tool, and is provided with a pin j<5> upon which is mounted the impressing die or tool. This tool, Fig. 14, consists of a pair of arms h, k<1> forming jaws k<2>, k<3> at their upper ends which carry the impressing-balls m<3> mounted within the die plates m and secured by the screws m<1>. The jaws may be closed together by means of the screw k<4>, which bears with its end upon the block k<9>. If it is desired to open the jaws widely, the block k<9> may slide up in the slot k<11>, and the end of the screw may then take into this slot. Modifications of this tool are described in which the balls may be replaced by roller, pegs, ribs, or equivalents, mounted in a suitable manner. Another form of tool is described, which may be used as a hand tool if desired, in which k, Fig. 34, is the fixed jaw and is provided with gaps k<4> to receive the trunnions k<5> on the sides of the body part k<1> which carries the adjustable portion m<3> of the jaw. By means of the grip k<9> the jaws may be adjusted. The stem swivels in a socket k<10>, which may take on to the jaw j<5>. Instead of having one fixed jaw both jaws may be movable, and instead of a screw toggle joints may be employed which may be operated by a feedmotion on the machine. One form of the joint is shown in Fig. 29, in which an internal liner or anvil h<3> with annular grooves h<4> is used to form an internal support for the joint, but this may be omitted if desired. In making the joint, the tube is placed in the rest and a rocking motion is given to the sleeve f by means of the rack and gearing. This motion is transmitted to the tool which operates upon the tube to form the joint. In an alternative method, the frame carrying the work is rotated and the tool remains stationary, and the jaws instead of being pivoted work upon a horizontal bed. The Provisional Specification describes a method of bulging by an endless band or rollers or equivalents.
