Abstract

10,048. Hoffmeister, R. April 22. Brakes; foot-rests.-Relates to means whereby a back pressure on either crank of a bicycle disconnects them from the chain-wheel and allows them to serve as foot-rests, or a back pressure on the crank A combined with a forward pressure on the crank B applies a brake to the chain-wheel. The crank A, Fig. 2, is mounted on the boss 11<a>, the pin 11<d> working in an elliptical hole, allowing it a slight relative motion. A disc 11, fixed to the crank axle and carrying the clutch mechanism, has a boss 11<a> on which the chain-wheel 10 is loosely mounted. The chain-wheel 10, Fig. 1, has a socket under each tooth, into one of which fits a pawl 12<c> during forward driving, a spring keeping it there. Fixed to the crank A and working through a slot in the disc 11 is a pin 13<a>. This, when the crank A is pressed backward, releases the pawl 12<c> and permits the crank to remain still. A brake strap 14 working in the groove 14<c>, Fig. 2, is fixed at one end to the disc 11 by a pin, Fig. 1<a>, the other end being carried by the pin 13<a>. Pressure on both cranks at once tightens this in its groove and retards the chain-wheel.
