Abstract

7192. Schmidt, A. March 19. Acetates. - Acetates of lead, copper, or the like are produced by acting upon the metal with commercial oxygen and acetic acid under pressure and at a temperature of about 50‹-60‹C. In producing neutral acetate of lead, the chambers A and A', Fig. 1, are about half filled with lead in the form of shot or the like, 40 per cent. to 50 per cent. acetic acid is run into the chamber A' by the cock f, and the chamber is heated by steam passed into the lower compartment b. The acid is subsequently removed by the pump m to the chamber A and oxygen is admitted at about 2 atmos. pressure to the moist lead in the chamber A'. At intervals the acid is pumped from one vessel to the other, the oxygen passing in the opposite direction through the pipe l. Finally, the solution produced by this alternate treatment with acid and oxygen is run off by the outlet g. Neutral acetate of copper is produced in the same way. Sub-acetate of copper is made by treating copper plates of about 5 mm. thickness in the compartment a, Fig. 2, with the vapours from acetic acid, which is heated by steam in the compartment b, and with oxygen under pressure admitted through a regulating-valve p. After a time the plates are removed, the verdigris is scraped off, and the plates are put back for further treatment.
