Abstract
7029. Bauer, C. March 17. Corks; stoppers; cork, treating.-Relates to corks, bungs, &c. for bottles or other vessels containing acids, alkalies, or other corrosive liquids or substances. The corks or bungs, instead of being entirely coated with india-rubber &c., are only coated at their inner ends, either by dipping the ends in a solution, or by attaching a disc or cap of india-rubber &c. to the end by means of cement. The outer end may also be similarly coated, the middle portion being left plain. In dipping the corks, the ends are immersed to a suitable depth in the solution, and, after withdrawal, the ends are scraped on the edge of the dipping-vessel to remove the solution from them, while the solution on the sides is allowed to dry. When the sides are properly coated, the ends are again dipped. By this method, a thicker coating is obtained around the lower edge. The Provisional Specification also states that the corks &c. may be wholly or partly coloured, by dipping them in a suitable pigment before they are coated.
