6192. Boult, A. J., [Rochester Cash Register Co.]. March 9. Platen presses.-Relates to the printing- mechanism of c h e c k tills. At each actuation the apparatus is "set" for indicating and registering the amount by moving fingerplates. A separate fingerplate is provided, say, for cents, dimes, and dollars, and for letters to distinguish the operators, and each carries a series of numbered depressions into the e required one of which the finger is placed and the plate thrust b a c k till the finger strikes a stop-bar. The drawer carries a record strip V<0>, wound between two rollers and passing over a platen V<3> under printing mechanism to be described, and then under a glass plate. The winding-on roller has an attached ratchet-wheel driven in one direction by pawls on a rocking-plate. This plate is rocked by a slip-pawl at each movement of the drawer and returned by a spring. Type-bars C<72>, Fig. 20, carrying duplicate type C<80>, C<81>, are set simultaneously with the indicating- mechanism, being connected therewith by parallel-motion levers and links, and sleeves, levers, and links C<40>, C<52>, C<62>. The type-bars slide in a frame 10 pivoted at 11 which is rocked by cam action, first downwards to print the record strip V<0> on the platen V<3>, and then upwards to print a check on a web X<72> as it passes over the platen 44. Levers 23, 23, pivoted on a sliding bar 27, carry inking- pads 22, 22 at the printing-line, normally raised just above the type. When the type-bars have been set and the actuating-handle of the apparatus is turned, a trigger mechanism is released which allows the bar 27 to be moved to the right by the action of a spring. The pins 23<1>, 23<1> running over a notched guide on the printing-frame, the pads are brought against the type by a spring and are then drawn apart, being finally, after printing has taken place, brought back to normal position. A handset dating-device 53 and a consecutive numbering-mechanism 57 are carried by a rocking frame 52 which is pressed against the web X<72> so as to print on the platen 40 by the return stroke of a vibrating arm 64. The latter receives its movement through a crank and connecting-rod from the actuating- shaft of the apparatus. At each movement of the frame 52, the numbering-mechanism is advanced one unit by the pawl 59. 65 is an inking-pad, which falls on to the face of the dating and numbering wheels whenever the frame 52 drops away from the platens. A roller 66, geared to the main shaft, feeds the check-web X<72> by its raised part 66', gripping it between such raised part and the adjustable feed-roller 68. The raised part may be a printing-plate, inked by a roller 69 and printing the back of the check with any desired matter. As the check strip 72 issues from the machine at X<74>, it is cut off by a pair of shears 70, 71 actuated by the apparatus.
