Abstract

4785. Metcalfe, H. W. Feb. 23. Clutches; shaft couplings. - Referring to Fig. 3, the driving- shaft carries a drum B, and the driven shaft an arm C', upon which is pivoted a lever E. The ends of the brake band D are coupled to the lever at the points F, G, and a fork n<1> on the driving-shaft engages with its inner end. The for is formed with a spiral groove, adapted to engage with a projection on a rod o passing through the shaft and coupled to the operating - sleeve, whereby the clutch may be thrown in and out of gear. Fig. 1 shows the invention as a shaft coupling. The inner end of the lever E is pivoted on the casing of a coiled spring, secured upon the shaft c to be driven. The brake band grips the drum by its own elasticity, or by the action of a spring. Should the resistance become too great, the band goes out of action.
