Abstract

3483. Alliott, J. B. Feb. 9. Cooling liquids.-Vacuum evaporating-apparatus for cooling liquids by removing heat therefrom by converting part of the liquid into vapour. The invention consists in treating the liquid to be cooled successively in two evaporating-vessels or stills 1, 2, having jet condensers 4, 7 and vacuum pumps 3, 6. The condensers 4, 7 are supplied with a cooling-agent, consisting of liquid deprived of air by the pumps 10 or 3, as described in Specification No. 3482, A.D. 1897. A supplementary condenser 4<a> may be used with the condenser 4, a liquid seal bei;ng maintained to ensure the passage of the vapours through the second condenser 4<a>. In combination with the condenser 7 and pump 6, or in place of them, a condenser 12 may be used, consisting of superposed trays containing sulphuric acid over which the vapours from the still 2 pass and are partly absorbed. In cooling solutions, they may be concentrated in the above apparatus to a higher degree of concentration than is required, and then may be further cooled by adding cold liquid thereto.
