Abstract

1401. Naville, A. A., Guye, P. A., and Guye, C. E. Jan. 20. Electric furnaces.-In apparatus for treating gases, the electrodes may be solid, as shown at C, Fig. 4, or tubular, as at B. In the latter case they serve to introduce into or withdraw from the tube A the gas under treatment, which is forced or exhausted therethrough. In Fig. 6 is shown an apparatus for dealing with large quantities of gas, having terminal tubular electrodes B, C, and intermediate metallic tubes C<1>, B<11> connected to a tubular collector D. The tubes are insulated by tubular bearings E. As examples of the use of the apparatus, the preparation of nitric acid, by using moist air with carbon electrodes, and of acetylene, by using hydrogen with carbon electrodes, are mentioned. In other cases, the electrodes may be of platinum, bronze, copper, nickel, ferro-nickel, various alloys, &c.
