3571. Johnson, J. H., [Hanel, A.]. Sept.12. Dry closets.-In closets or receptacles for sewage matters the solid portions are separated from the liquids, dried, and deodorized. The enamelled cast-iron pan A communicates with an enamelled cast-iron box B for separating the fµces, and having a flap a at one end and a slide b at the other end. A fumigating and drying box C, pre- ferably of cast iron, with a grating c and an air pipe d, and an ash-pan D with a petroleum or other lamp e, are placed beneath, as shown. The pan A is curved at the front, rectangular at the back, and has a rectangular opening 3. The seat 4 is wooden, and can be removed with the outer case. The box B has an inclined bottom, and is closed at the front by the slide b. The box C consists of two sides and a back ; the sliding grate c has a handle v. When the grate is drawn out, the dried excrements are discharged into the compartment 11 of the pan D. The cover 8 is pivoted at f and actuates the flap a by means of two bent levers h, g, and the slide b by means of segmental arms 13, side rods 14. and a front cross-rod m which is connected to the slide b by rods p. The liquid portion of the fµces escapes beneath the slide b and is collected in a suitable vessel. When the cover 8 is closed, the slide b is drawn backwards, and the flap a is opened by a projection s, thus causing solid substances to fall on the grate c. Papers and the like are burnt on the grate by the lamp e, and the fµcal matters are dried by the heat and covered with lamp black or fine carbon by the smoke. Noxious gases are burnt and led through the pipe d to a chimney or carried by a pipe above the roof. The lampblack absorbs ammonia and sulphuretted hydrogen. A flap n is provided at the front to remove the vessel con- taining the liquid portion. When the grate c is drawn out, the dried excrement and ashes fall into the pan D, and the grate is cleaned by means of fixed or movable scrapers. The plate w above the lamp is loose, so that it may be renewed. Gases from the box B are drawn beneath the slide b, and escape by the pipe d. Urine may be discharged from the box B into a pipe communicating with a sewer, and the pan D may be replaced by a funnel leading to a larger receptacle. For large buildings, such as hospitals, barracks, hotels, &c., a number of contiguous closets may be furnished with heating-appliances, grates, and waste pipes in common ; closets may be arranged one above another and have a common waste pipe.
