Abstract

187,573. Souczek, F. Oct. 21, 1921, [Convention date]. Addition to 148,757. Picking-motions; checking shuttles and pickers; pickers; shuttle-boxes; shuttles.-In driving- mechanism for reciprocating objects, particularly shuttles of looms, as described in the parent Specification, a rotating magnet drum 21, Figs. 1 and 2, is used comprising cast steel parts 2, 3, 4, the part 2 being fixed to the spindle 1 and the annular part 4 being detachably screwed to the part 3, which is adjustable. Electric current is supplied to a magnet-exciter winding 6 in the part 3 by means of brushes 9, 10, the magnetic flux having to bridge air gaps 11, 12. The parts 2, 4 are formed with wedge-flanges 13, 14, which are separated when the electric current is cut off by the action of a spring or springs 18 in boxes in the part 4 pressing against pins 19, so that the movement of the shuttle is not interfered with. The lower lateral surfaces of the shuttle are chamfered to suit the wedge-angles of the drum flange. When the shuttle enters the shuttle box 25, it engages the picker 22, thereby extending springs 26, Fig. 2<a>, attached to brackets carried by the picker and fitting through slots 24, whereby the shuttle is stopped. The shuttle is held wedged against the top walls of the box by means of a spring-controlled hardwood wedge 29, resting on rollers 30, but, when the magnet windings are excited and the flanges 13, 14 of the rotating magnet drum are thereby caused to approach one another, they act on a wedge-shaped spring-controlled driver rod 32 which engages the wedge 29, moves it to the left, and frees the shuttle. The shuttle is then ejected from the box under the action of the stressed springs acting on the picker brackets, and it passes between a vertically-adjustable stopbar 16 and the flanges 13, 14, whereby it is picked across the loom. The magnet drum is driven by a belt 20, and the contact-device for the electric currents used has only two current-giving contacts. The wedge 29 may be actuated by a cord and knob 37 when it is desired to remove the shuttle. It is stated that, in a modification, the two drum parts are pressed together at the desired time by means of wire cable and levers from the old shuttle-throwing shaft, by means of cams. The picker is filled with rubber or leather.
