Abstract

187,145. Golde, R. E. Oct. 27, 1921. Hoods. - The hood of a motor-car is opened and closed by a lever from the driver's seat, which lever also opens and closes the lid of the box which receives the folded hood. The hood is operated by a hand-lever 1 connected by ropes and levers to the journals 14 of toothed segments 13 mounted at each side of the body and gearing with toothed segments 15 connected to the main stays 38. The segments are eccentrically mounted to accelerate the movement of the hood, which is supported by slotted struts 16 which hold up the stays 37 during the folding of the hood, after which the folded frame descends into a box, the lid 24 of which is in two parts each mounted on swinging arms 23, 27, cranked at their lower ends. The cranks are connected by a rod 25. The arm 23 is also connected to a pushing rod 21 connected to a bell-crank lever 12 by a pin 30 passing into a slot 28 in the segment 13. The lever 12 is connected to an auxiliary lever 2 adapted to be locked to the lever 1 by a pawl 31<1> controlled by a spring bolt 31. Springs attached to the rods 25 tend to open the lids, which can only move when the position of the pin 30 in the slot 28 allows the movement. In lowering the hood, the lever 1 is pulled over, when the movement of the segment 13 allows the gradual opening of the lids, which are closed at the end of the movement by operation of the lever 2.
