Abstract

186,409. Sulzberger, N. June 24, 1921. Fireproof paper; pulp, adding special substances to; sizing.-Non-charring asbestos paper, &c. is made by using an inorganic colloid as a binder or, if an organic binder is used, the organic matter is removed by heating under oxidizing conditions. As colloid, aluminium silicate may be used (with ammonia and tannic acid), or barium sulphate. Where an organic binder is used, the paper is preferably also treated with an oxidizing-saltpetre. A small amount of catalytic material which promotes oxidation may be added. The asbestos paper may serve as a carrier for catalytic material such as finely-divided platinum, for making fireproof fabrics such as cloth and lace, for gas mantles, or for insulating material. It may be used for cigarette wrappers, and holders for cigarettes and cigars may be made therefrom. When used for cigarette wrappers, the presence of an oxidizing-agent such as saltpetre in the paper promotes the combustion of the tobacco during smoking.
