Abstract

186,132. Lowen, C. G., and Lingwood, C. P. June 17, 1921. Dials. - Relates to an alarm clock in which the going mechanism and the main portions of the alarm mechanism are of the usual construction for a drum type clock and in which the dial is graduated in minutes for a time space of one hour. Motion-work.-The motionwork is either altered, in that the motion wheel and hour hand are dispensed with, Figs. 1, 2; or is entirely dispensed with, Fig. 5. Alarm mechanism. -The hour-wheel c, Figs. 1 and 2, engages a pinion a<7> which engages the alarm cam-wheel b<5>; thus the escape cam b<4> and the wheel b<5> of the alarm train are rotated once an hour. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the alarm cam b<4> is carried by the spring release catch g of the alarm mechanism and the minute-arbor a, which carries the set alarm nut, extends through the alarm cam b<4>. The trip pin g<1> is carried by the minute-arbor a<x>; and the cam b<4>, pin g<1> and the minute-hand are arranged so that the pin g<1> trips the catch g on the minute-hand reaching zero. Stop mechanism.-The stop mechanism comprises a bar f, Fig. 1, mounted to slide inside the case f, fitted with an operating-knob f<2> and provided with a springy blade f<4>. To stop the clock the knob is moved to draw the blade f<4> into contact with the balance-wheel a<6>. To restart the clock the knob is moved downwards and the blade f<4>, before breaking contact with the balancewheel gives it a push to start it rotating. Short-time movements.-To set the clock for giving an alarm after a predetermined interval, the minute-hand is moved to zero and the alarmsetting hand is moved to the desired position; on restarting the clock it runs for the required period and then gives an alarm. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the minute-hand is set from zero, reading counter-clockwise to the period after which an alarm is required. The clock is then restarted and the hand travels to zero, whereupon the alarm is given.
