Abstract

185,553. Grotrian, Helfferich, Schulz, T. Steinweg Nachfolger, and Hansen, C. J. June 27, 1921. Sound-boards for musical instruments are composed of woods selected in various ways according to the products of their elasticities and specific gravities. These products may be kept constant with both the elasticities and the specific gravities constant or not. The products may be greater for the treble than the bass, or may rise in stages towards the middle and then fall. In the latter case the ratios of the elasticities to the specific gravities may remain equal or vary uniformly. Where the products are too high or too low, the woods may be utilized by reducing or increasing the thickness or width by one-quarter of the percentage excess or deficiency, different thicknesses being made to merge. The invention is also applicable to parts of the sound-board, as the ribs.
