Abstract

183,308. Clay, S. B. May, 27, 1021. Tapping.-A multiple-spindle nut-tapping machine, designed to stop working after tapping a predetermined number of blanks, has the tapspindles lifted by fluid pressure and fed by gravity. The tap-spindle B of each unit is driven by ordinary toothed gearing and moves axially with the rod H<1> of a piston operating in the cylinder G. A slide-valve for admission and exhaust of working-fluid is mounted in a chest I and is controlled either manually by actuation of the lever 20, or automatically by a bar 26, Fig. 2, mounted on the piston-rod. A mutilated toothed wheel J carried by the bar 26, has as many teeth as there are blanks to be tapped in each period of working, and is adapted to lift the valve for exhaust b one of its teeth engaging a pin 36 on the valve spindle. The wheel is rotated one tooth at the end of each downward stroke of the tap, by a fixed spring-pressed pawl 34, and is retained from retrograde movement by a second pawl 38. The valve is moved to cut off exhaust and open to admission by the bar 26 engaging a nut 25 on a valve-operating spindle 24. Operation proceeds in this sequence till failure of the valve to open to exhaust occurs owing to the pressure of a space on the wheel J. The blank-feeding mechanism forming the subject-matter of Specification 183,785 is shown on the drawings.
