Abstract
183,170. Cullin, J. F. Feb. 16, 1921. Locating faults in insulation; combinations of instruments. - An armature-testing device comprises means for rotatably supporting the armature, an electromagnet for inducing currents in the armature coils, indicators to show the intensity of these currents, and means electrically connecting the indicators and contacting with the commutator segments. The device is described with reference to an armature having twenty-one coils. The armature is supported between the poles of an electromagnet 11, 12 on pedestals 3, 4 connected to an iron plate 2, the commutator segments being connected to a series of lamps 20 - - 24 by contact pins 33 - - 38 through switches 25 - - 29. The contact pins are mounted to slide in an insulating-block 32 against conducting-springs 42, a spring contact 39 being earthed through the lamp 24. The number of coils between certain commutator segments and between the contact pins determines the degree of brilliancy of the lamps 20 - - 23 and a short-circuit in one of the coils alters the brilliancy, thus indicating the faulty section of coils. The faulty coil is located by a lamp circuit always connected to one coil, An earthed coil is located bv the contact 39 when the lamp 24 glows. The switches 25 - - 29 may be omitted.
