Abstract

180,296. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Hoxie, C. A.). May 20, 1921, [Convention date]. Vibration, indicating; photographic recorders. -Relates to apparatus for recording sound and like waves photographically. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 3, sound to be recorded affects a diaphragm 17 in a transmitter 10, which diaphragm is connected to a mirror 18 by which a beam of light is reflected from a source 11 through a slit 12 on to a photo-electric cell 14. The cell is connected in the grid circuit of a thermionic valve 15 through a resistance coupling, the plate circuit of the valve including an electromagnet 16 which operates a diaphragm 19. A mirror 20 secured to this diaphragm reflects a second beam of light through a slit 40 in a casing containing a moving photographic film 39, on which an amplified record of the vibrations of the first beam of light corresponding to the sound waves is thus produced. The slits 12, 40 partially intercept the respective beams of light. Each mirror is connected to its diaphragm by rods 25, 26, Fig. 3, and is mounted on a triangular shaft 27 held in jewel bearings by a permanent magnet. The apparatus may be used for amplifying the vibrations of an oscillograph, for which purpose the oscillograph mirror is substituted for the mirror 18, and the mirror 20 and its actuating means may be replaced by a second oscillograph. The photo electric-cell is preferably of the kind described in Specification 190,218 [Class (39 (i). Electric lamps, Arc, &c.]. Fig. 5 shows a film having thereon a single record produced as described, though several such records may be made on one film. A rotating photographic plate may be used instead of a film. Specification 130,762 also is referred to. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the amplifying- device may be dispensed with altogether, and the vibrations of the beam from the mirror 18 recorded directly. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
