Abstract
179,866. Imray, O. Y., (Burt, Co., Ltd., F. N.). Aug. 15, 1921. Labelling.-In a machine for affixing labels or other strips around rectangular boxes &c., the boxes are carried in recesses at the ends of rotatable arms 70 radiating from a shaft 18, and pads 73 for gumming the ends of the labels are arranged adjacent the recesses so as to lie in the same plane as the face of the boxes therein. Gum is applied to the face of the boxes and to the pads 73 by a roller 81 while the arms 70 are rotating, the roller being swung out from a supply roller 81<1> for this purpose by a cam. When the arms 70 are stationary, the pile 88 of labels is depressed causing the lowermost label to adhere, as regards its centre portion, to the gummed box, and its ends to the gummed pads 73. At the next position of the arms 70 a reciprocating plate 94 presses the label more firmly into contact with the box and the pads. At the lowest position of the arms 70 the box is ejected by a plunger 102 and pushed into a brush-lined shoot 111, Fig. 15, whereby the label is folded upon the ends of the box. Alternately reciprocating bars provided cvith wiping-rollers 112<1> then fold down the ends c of the label on to the fourth side of the box. The shoot 111 is raised by a cam to receive the boxes from the arms 70. The boxes are fed into the machine on a sloping conveyer band 22, Fig. 3, and are pushed in succession from a stop 27 into position beneath a spring finger 31 by a pusher 28. A second pusher 29, Fig. 4, pushes the boxes from this finger into the carrier arms 70. The pusher 29 has a hollow face connected by a flexible pipe 6 to a vacuum pump whereby the boxes are caused to adhere to the pusher. A cam-operated valve breaks the vacuum to release the boxes. A rocking arm 37, Fig. 3, which operates the pusher 28 is mounted on a rod 38 by a frictional connection so as to yield if a box becomes jammed on the conveyer. This connection comprises half-collars 49, Fig. 9, pressed together by springs 51, the part of the rod 38 embraced by them being flattened at 48 to cause the half-collars to separate if an obstruction occurs; the expanding collar then moves a bar 54 to release a spring-actuated clutch-operating rod 11<1> and so stops the machine. The arm 37 is actuated by mutilated gearing which gives the pusher 28 a longer dwell in the retracted than in the forward position. The boxes are positioned in the carrier 70 by rigid gauges 75 and spring gauges 77, Fig. 11, having sloping surfaces to guide the boxes into position. All parts connected with the box-holders are adjustable. The arms 70 are rotated intermittently by mutilated gearing. The labelled boxes emerging from the shoot 111 are pushed along a trough by a pusher 124 actuated by a cam-operated arm 127, Fig. 18, connected to it by a pin 136 gripped frictionally between plates 132, 133 pressed together by a spring 138, so that the pusher can yield if an obstruction occurs. In this case, the plates separate and a projection 147 on the plate 132 raises a bar 139 and a rod 143 to actuate the clutch-releasing rod 54 to stop the machine.
