Stoppers, plug.-A stopper comprising a coiled strip of material which is compressed when the stopper is forced into the neck of a receptacle and is retained therein by friction, is so constructed that the strip is capable of being coiled more tightly to relieve the pressure against the neck and facilitate removal of the stopper. As shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the coiled strip comprises a strip D of thin sheet metal with a longer strip C of fairly stiff material, such as Manila paper, on each side and a covering-strip E of cheap material such as thin Manila paper, the strips having aligned notches engaged by the loop 16 of a staple B which is rotated to coil the strips, whereupon the end of the strip E is adhesively secured. The coil may be shaped in a die, a stiff disc F of waxed paper, carboard, cork, &c., is placed against the bottom of the coil, and the whole is placed, and preferably adhesively secured, in an impervious cup G of metal foil, paraffined or waxed paper, or both foil and paraffined or plain paper. A disc A of thick cardboard is then placed on the cup, the sharp ends 18 of the bent arms of the staple penetrating the disc and being clinched, and a paper covering H is applied. To remove the stopper from a receptacle neck, the disc A is rotated in the proper direction to wind the coil more tightly around its loop. In a modification, a single strip I, Fig. 13, of heavy Manila paper is coiled around its intermediate portion 22 and is placed in a cup provided with a cap marked with dots or circles for the insertion therethrough of a winding-key, Fig. 15.
