Abstract

178,524. Crompton & Co., Ltd., A. G. :E. Electric Motors, Ltd., Jones, W. F., and Waters, H. C. Jan. 12, 1921. Lighting and heating systems; systems of charging and discharging galvanic batteries; starting prime-movers, dynamo-electric machines and control circuits for.-An electric supply svstem comprising a petrol engine and a dynamo-electric machine adapted to operate as a starting-motor and as a generator, is provided with voltage balance relay and a control relay having two windings which are open-circuited when the engine is being started. To start the system, a knob G, Fig. 1, is depressed to open the circuit of the relays V, X at the switch H, to render the ignition system operative by lowering the switch K, to energize the starting-relay T through the switch J, and to place the armature L, slidably mounted on the spindle E, in contact with a holdon magnet M. The operation of the relay T places the armature A and series field winding B of the dynamo-electric machine across the battery O, and the machine runs as a series motor to start the engine. When the engine starts the knob G is released and the switch J is opened to deenergize the relay T, thereby disconnecting the machine from the batterv, the switch H is closed, and the switch K is held open since the magnet M in the shunt field circuit C of the machine or in a separate circuit is energized. The balanced voltage relay V comprises a coil v<1> connected across the dynamo, a coil v<2> connected across the battery, a pivoted armature w, and an adjustable weight w<1>. When the voltage of the dynamo rises above that of the battery to a determined extent, the relay V operates to close at its contacts W the circuit of the switch U, thereby connecting the dynamo to the battery 0 through the winding x of a relay X and connecting the coil x<1> of the relav X across the dynamo at the contacts u, u<1>. When the current in the charging-circuit is reduced to a predetermined value, the relay X operates to short-circuit at the contact Y the hold-on magnet M and the switch K is closed to stop the engine. A switch Z operated by the armature of the relay X is operated to break the circuit of the coil v<1> of the relay V and the switch U is de-energized to disconnect the dynamo from the battery. When it is not desired to stop the engine, the contact Y of the relay X is omitted or a switch is inserted in the circuit of the switch K to prevent the switch from rendering the ignition circuit inoperative.
