Abstract
178,108. Verhulst, M. J. April 6, 1921, [Convention date]. Controlling distribution of liquids.-Relates to fixed-chamber apparatus in which there are at least two measuring-chambers so adapted that liquid overflows from one into the other, and consists in providing each chamber with floatoperated gear controlling the supply and delivery of the other chamber. The chambers are discharged by siphons, and the parts are so arranged that the liquid is allowed to come to rest before being discharged. A container 1 is divided into two measuring-chambers 3 by a partition 2 and has at its base two float-chambers 6 containing floats 7 and communicating with discharge-chambers 11 by pipes 12. Delivery-pipes 8 pass through the bottom of the container and through the discharge-chambers and end a little below the top of the partition 2; these are covered bv bellmembers 9 having valves 10 at the top adapted to close the ends of the delivery pipes. To the floats are attached rods 13 guided in holes in transverse bars 15 and having pins 16 adapted to engage the forked ends 17 of levers 18 pivoted at 19 to the container and carrying straps 24 from which the bell-members are hung by rod's 23. Each float-rod carries at its upper end a finger 20 adapted to engage an abutment 26 on a rocking shaft 27 to which is fixed a double spout 28. Stops 25 are provided to limit the movement of the floats, and the straps 24 are adjustable so that the moment at which each bell is lifted can be varied. With the parts as shown, both tanks being empty, liquid supplied through a pipe 29 is deflected into the left-hand chamber and lifts the left-hand float; when the left-hand pin 16 engages its fork, the right-hand bell is lifted. When the liquid overflows into the right-hand chamber, the right-hand float rises and rocks the spout so that the right-hand tank is supplied, and further rise of the float causes the left-hand bellmember to be lifted, discharging the left-hand chamber by a siphon action. This causes the lefthand float to fall, closing the valve of the righthand chamber before the liquid has reached the end of the discharge tube, and the action then goes on alternately. The quantity measured may be varied by adjusting the height to which the bell-members are lifted, and the floats are adapted to remain just floating when the chambers are emptied, so that they rise quickly.
