Abstract

177,764. Suczek, R. March 28, 1921, [Convention date]. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Working-fluid supply; regulating; motor power plant.-Relates to turbines driven by effecting internal combustion in contact with a liquid in a rotating combustion chamber, and consists in discharging the liquid in a jet, the cross-section of which is varied. The turbine rotor R comprises a centrifugal compressor C, a receiving chamber A, and an explosion chamber E. The compressor C delivers water mixed with gas drawn in through ports j, k in the impeller to the receiving chamber A where the water, being the heavier, is thrown to the outer portion of the chamber. Valves V, V<1>, cam-operated from a shaft B, admit water and gas respectively to the explosion chamber E and, on explosion at a plug g<3>, the water is driven through a nozzle N giving a reaction effect to the rotor R. An impulse wheel may be combined with the turbine. The valves V, V<1>, as shown in Fig. 6, comprise an incomplete elastic rim V which is flexed to a smaller diameter by a rack and lever mechanism v<3>, s<3> and opens ports n<3> in an annular recess. Similar valves v<2> are provided for the exhaust of the gases. The nozzles, Figs. 1 and 2, comprise a chamber y<1> with a port z<1>, a ported sleeve a<2> rotated through bevel gearing from the shaft B and a longitudinally adjustable member g<2> with a port h<2>. The rotation of the sleeve a<2> with its port i<2> changes the direction of the jet; the port h<2> in the member g<2> is of such shape as to counteract this effect and also the fall of velocity. due to the expansion of the gases, by increasing the volume of the jet. The jet may be regulated by adjusting the member g<2> through a rod m<2> and levers j<2>, f<2>. The shaft B and rotor R are caused to rotate at different speeds by gearing z<2>, x<2>, w<2>, y<2>, the gears x<2>, w<2> being mounted on a bracket u<2> fixed to a shaft t<2> which may be driven at varying speeds by an electric motor M. By varying the differential speed the number of explosions and therefore the power may be regulated. At starting, gas may be supplied direct to the explosion chamber E through the rotor shaft and past a valve b<3>. If desired, fuel may be supplied through the upper rotor shaft by a conduit m<1>, n<1> to a chamber o, and fed therefrom by an eccentric-driven plunger t<1> to a spray nozzle h<1> in the explosion chamber. The exhaust gases may be used to generate steam for use in a steam turbine; the heat of the hydraulic fluid may be used to heat feed water. Two units may be mounted on a single horizontal shaft and a single compressor may supply both units.
