Drying fabrics and materials in long lengths.- Apparatus for drying paper, cloth, &c. in web form or for drying material which is carried by a conveyer, of the class in which electric heatdng and an automatic air circulation are provided, comprises a heat-reflecting screen on which the electric heating-elementa are disposed so that the heat at the various parts of the apparatus is appropriately varied; the air passes upwardly in the inclined drying-chamber and at the upper end the moister portions are expelled, the remainder passing down through a conduit to be used again. Fig. 2 shows an inclined drying-chamber through which a web 1 of paper travels in counter-current to the air, and which is provided with a polished floor 6 on which insulators 7 are mounted carrying bars 8 on which are supported electric resistances 9 by which the heating is effected; direct or alternating current may be employed. To counteract the tendency of the paper to dry more rapidly at the edges, the chamber is divided into sections in the first of which a single heating- element is disposed in the middle, while in the others two and three heating-elements are employed extending nearer to the edges; switches regulate the degree of heating. A false, roof 14 formed with apertures 16 at the ends allows a natural circulation of part of the air to take place, while the colder and moister air passes out at an aperture 5 in the end. In the passage 17 above the roof 14, desiccants may be provided, or the parts forming the conduit may be constructed of moisture-absorbing material. Hinged side doors are provided, by opening which cooling is instantaneously effected.
