Abstract

176,918. Collier, A. Sept. 23, 1921. Bulk evaporators.-A liquor obtained by treating blast furnace and like slag with acid is passed to a boiler 25 and thence to an evaporator and calciner 28, which preferably has a flat bottom and arched roof, and is inclined as shown, being heated most at the upper end. The solid salts are traversed up the incline and out of the liquid by a rake 32 carried by cranks 34, the spaces between the blades being cleared by scrapers in the form of blades 35 which are supported flexibly and resiliently from the roof, and are free at their lower ends. The decomposition of the solid salts in the upper part of the evaporator 28 produces fumes of hydrochloric acid and some ferric chloride. The fumes escape by a pipe 36 to a scrubber 37, and the solid residue passes through rollers 39 and falls into warm water in a tank 40 having stirrers 41. A current of air is supplied by a pipe 44 to the space below the rollers 39 to carry the hydrochloric acid fumes upwards past a baffle 45.
