Abstract
176,549. Osmosis Co., Ltd., Highfield, J. S., and Laurie, D. Northall-. Dec. 21,1920. Pottery materials.-A clay suspension obtained with an electrolyte, such as that resulting from the mining process described in Specification 135,277, is allowed to settle in a tank while the lower part of the material is maintained in a state of slow motion sufficient to prevent the formation of a solid deposit. The supernatant liquid is then drawn off, leaving a lower layer of creamy consistency which can be run out directly to a drier. The upper liquid may be passed to another settling-tank, where water and electrolyte are. added, and, after the separation of a fine clay, which can be dug out from time to time, it may be used again for the mining operation. Figs. 2 and 4 show two forms of suitable apparatus. The tank a, Fig. 2, has a rotary agitator b near the bottom and a vertically-adjustable siphon f for the discharge of the supernatant liquid. The stirring- device p, Fig. 4, consists of a rectangular frame with cross-bars. It is suspended on rods q and oscillated by means of a crank-shaft t. A modification is described in which the frame has wheels, which run on the bottom of the tank, and is oscillated by means of an endless band.
