Abstract

175,920. Alexander, A. E., (Mechano Gear Shift Co.). April 12, 1921. Controlling variablespeed gearing.-Change of gear is effected bv bars 23, Figs. 1 and 3, reciprocated in opposite directions by a main clutch lever 5, Fig. 2, of a motorvehicle, selection being made by independent means operating selectively to release spring dogs 34, Fig. 5, adapted to lock striking-forks 31, Fig. 4, to the bars 23. The bars 23 are connected by racks and a pinion 29, Fig. 3, and the end 24 of one bar is jointed to a lever 25, Fig. 1, connected by a link 27 and lost-motion joint 27<a>, Fig. 2, to the lever 5, so that the main clutch is disengaged before the bars slide. Each of the forks 31 is secured to a pair of sleeves 33, Fig. 6, which slide loosely upon the bars 23, each pair being coupled by a tube 32 containing a pair of dogs 34 thrust apart by a spring. Notches 30,. Fig. 3, are provided, two in each of the bars 23, to be engaged by the dogs 34 when released. The bars 23 when actuated by the lever 5 first bring the gearing to neutral. Continued disengaging pedal movement then brings a selected new gear combination into engagement. The dogs 34 have pins 35, Fig. 9, projecting from the tubes 32, which in the neutral position shown, are all four engaged by catches 44, which hold the dogs out of action. To bring a new speed into effect, the catch 44 corresponding is raised out of the way,. and the pedal 5 is thrust right down. Release of the pedal merely re-engages the clutch. This selective raising of the catches 44 is effected by turning a cam-shaft 49, Fig. 6, the catches having a vertical sliding movement against spring pressure. This shaft 49 is connected by rods 52, 53, Figs. 1 and 2, to a lever 56 wording over a quadrant 57 under the steering-wheel 8. Locking in gear position is effected by spring-pressed balls 42, Fig. 6, engaging recesses 43, Fig. 9.
