Abstract

175,919. Alexander, A. E., (Mechano Gear Shift Co.). April 12, 1921. Controlling variable-speed gearing.-The change of gear is effected by bars 19, 20 reciprocated in opposite directions by, say, the main clutch lever 8, Fig. 1, of a vehicle, selection being made by independent locking action when the gears are in neutral, with the lever 8 depressed. A lever 24 joined to the lever 8 has a head 23 adapted to engage a mortise 22 in the end of the bar 20 projecting from a recessed gear-box cover 30. These bars are connected by a radially pivoted lever 21. Striking-forks 27, 29, Figs. 2 and 7, are secured respectively to sleeves 26, 28 adapted to slide on the bars 19, 20. Cross-bars 35, 38 are secured to the bars 19, 20 respectively, and when the pedal 8 is depressed to release the clutch 6 the bars 19, 20 move to the right and left respectively of Fig. 1, causing the neutralizing-bars 35, 33 to come together, bringing the forks and sleeves into the neutral position shown. The selective locking device, which then comes into action, comprises four pawls 32 pivoted to lugs 31 upon the sleeves 26, 28, two pawls to each sleeve extending in opposite directions. When the pedal 8 has been thrust right down and one of the pawls 32 is depressed as shown in Fig. 6, the pawl engages an inclined flank 37 of a cross-bar such as 35. On release of the pedal, the pawl and sleeve selected are carried in the selected direction as the cross-bars fly apart. The pawls 32 have notches 33 which, in the neutral position, engage fixed transverse stops 41. When a pawl has been pulled away by a cross-bar, it slides under a stop 41 and is kept in engagement with the bar until the bar returns to neutral. The depressing of the pawls 32 is effected through levers 44 pivoted to a fixed plate 40 by bell-cranklevers 46 actuated by separate wires 47 and pushbuttons 53, Figs. 3 and 4. When a button hasbeen depressed to select a gear, it remains down until the gear element corresponding has been brought back to neutral, so serving as an indicator. The sleeves 26, 28 are interlocked by a balk 42, Fig. 7, in a recess in the plate 40.
