Abstract
175,750. Talbot, J. Nov. 20, 1920, Rotary-tool cultivators.-A rotary-tool cultivating-machine comprises a digging-wheel in rolling contact with the ground, a leading wheel carrying coulter blades in advance of the digger, a subsoiler wheel carrying tines, blades, &c. behind the digger, means for removing the uplifted soil from the digger, and means for conveying the soil into the furrow behind the subsoiler. The digging-wheel consists of two rings 22, 23 connected together by equally-spaced cross-bars 24 and supported by spokes 3 extending to an axle 2 to which a draught-frame 5 is connected. Tapered and curved tines 4 are secured on the cross-bars 24, the curve of the tines being cycloidal. The uplifted soil is removed from the digger by a plunger 17 driven by a crank 18 and spur gearing 19, 20 so as to reciprocate into and out of the spaces between the rows of tines. A U-shaped guide 21 is provided for the reciprocating member. In a modification of the soil-removing apparatus the plane of reciprocation of the plunger is at right-angles to the plane of rotation of the wheel. If the rows of tines are disposed obliquely across the wheel rim, the direction of movement of the plunger is arranged to correspond. The coulter wheel 28 is supported by a bracket 30 on the frame 5, and is in rolling contact with the ground. The subsoiler 32 is carried by a frame 31 rigidly connected to the frame 5 and rolls in the furrow. A mouldboard 33 conveys the soil from the digging-wheel to the furrow behind the subsoiler. The digging-tines may be connected together by transverse bars having serrated cutting-edges. Several digging-wheels may be arranged side by side; hand and furrow wheels, a wheeled carriage, or other means may be provided for guiding and transporting purposes. According to the Provisional Specification, the soil may be removed from the digging-wheel by revolving blades or by fixed mouldbnards, spring levers, &c., and may fall on to a revolving wheel having shelves to catch it; and long tines may be provided on the digger to scarify the subsoil without raising it.
