Abstract

175,661. Heim, L. R. Feb. 18, 1921, [Convention date]. Disc apparatus; rollers, treating. - A machine for grinding rolls &c. comprises a frame 10, Fig. 1, on which slide carriages 13, 14 adjustable towards each other by hand-wheels 31, 27 respectively. The wheel 31 is mounted on a threaded sleeve engaging a boss on the carriage 13, and the wheel 27 is mounted on a shaft passing through this sleeve and threaded to engage a box on the carriage 14. A grinding- wheel 15 and a regulating- wheel 16 are mounted on the carriages and driven from pulleys 36, 49 on shafts 37, 47 by belts 34, 43 passing over jockey-pulleys 35, 69. The shaft 47 is driven by a belt 50 from the driving-shaft 37 through change-speed gearing, shown in Fig. 4. The bolt 50 passes around either of a pair of pulleys 45, 46 loose on the fixed spindle 47 and around corresponding pulleys fixed to the shaft 37. The pulleys 45, 46 are connected by a bolt 52, on which rotate integral pinions 53, 54 meshing with pinions 55, 58 secured to sleeves 56, 59 on the shaft 47, the sleeve 56 being held stationary by a key 57. The pinions 53. 54 being of slightly different sizes, the sleeve 59 is slowly rotated when the pulleys 45, 46 are driven at the normal rate. The pulley 49 carrying the belt 48 is freelv mounted on the sleeve 59 and can be moved axially, by a hand-wheel 68 operating a hook 66 engaging with a grooved hub 65 of the pulley 49 to clutch the pulley to either the pulley 45 or the sleeve 59, coned clutch surfaces being provided. Thus, the pulley 49 and the regulating-wheel 16 can be driven slowly or quickly. The rolls 17 to be treated are passed between the wheels 15, 16 and are rotated by contact with the slow-running wheel 16 and ground by the fast-running wheel 15. The axis of the wheel 16 is slightly inclined to the horizontal so that the wheel imparts a slow traverse to the rolls 17 from front to back of the machine. The rolls are supported on a carrier 71, Fig. 9, having a hard steel insert 70 and secured to a bed 81 by bolts 72, 73 in slots in posts 76, 77 on the bed. A wedge 79 moved laterally by a screw 83 adjusts the height of the carrier 71. The wedge 79 may be replaced by another having differently inclined surfaces, thus altering the inclination of the carrier 71 and the rate of feed of the rolls. Guide-plates 86, 87, 89, 90 are secured to the carrier 71 by bolts 72, 73 and are adjusted for various diameters of work by set-screws 88, 91. These plates can be adjusted vertically by passing the bolts through auxiliary holes 86a, 89a therein. The rolls after passing between the wheels 15, 16 are returned to the front of the machine by way of a shoot opening at 97 to discharge the rolls into a receptacle 100 containing liquid to cushion the falling work. A wire basket 104 within the receptacle 100 allows the rolls to be removed independently of the liquid. A centrifugal impeller pump in a casing 105 behind the receptacle 100 draws liquid therefrom and delivers it through a pipe 117 to the surface of the wheels 15, 16. A casing 106 above the housing 105 provides a bearing 108 for a shalt 109 rotating the impeller, the bearing being above the liquid level, thus avoiding the use of a stuffing-box for the shaft 109. The pump is driven from the shaft 37 by a belt 115 and gears 110, 111. A casing 92, providing hoods for both wheels 15, 16 and having detachable covers 94 secured by latches 95a and wing-nuts, is secured by bolts 101 to the frame 10, and is slotted at the back to permit adjustment of the wheels. The axis of the wheel 16, Fig. 12, is substantially level with that of the work 17, whereas the wheel 15 is lower, and the surface of the carrier 71 is inclined upwardly towards the wheel 15 so that on engagement of a projection on the roll with the wheel 16, the roll is forced upwardly, thus avoiding the grinding of a flat on the opposite side thereof.
