Abstract
174,431. Roberts, W. T. B., Bates, A., and British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd. Oct. 22, 1920. Lasting and pulling-over.-In a machine which " pulls over " under the operator eye and lasts the toe portion, the margin of the upper around the toe is held for the lasting by yielding means of the machine with a grip which, compared to that prevailing during pulling-over, is reduced and slipping. Mechanism of the type described in Specifications 7005/00 and 12304/03, having but a single pair of gripping jaws at each side of the shoe, may be used to give a transverse pull to the upper; and, preferably, a fore-draw by mechanism of the type described in Specification 13175/03. The edge of the upper around the toe is then clamped between wiper plates and a curved presser 92, Fig. 9, by the descent of a triangular plate 110 also actuating a last-depressing foot 96. The upper is thus stretched over the toe, slipping as required between the wiper plates and the presser 92. As the side pincers move inwards to lay the upper over the last a latch 120 is released, allowing a plate 108 to move upwards about its pivoted connection with the plate 110, the grip on the upper of the presser 92 being then governed by a light spring 124 in. stead of a heavy spring 106. Wiper plates then advance over the upper, and a binding-wire, previously automatically fed into a groove in their advancing edges, is secured by tacks at its ends. The groove for the binding-wire is in line with offset holes 62, Fig. 6, in one of each pair of tackholding fingers 58. The driver bar guide has a screw-thread on it engaging an adjustable screw in its casing. This guide is rotated by a flexible shaft after the tack has been driven, with the result that the wire is wound round the tack and the guide and fingers are simultaneously raised to clear the tack. Between operations on consecutive shoes, wire feeding and severing mechanism is operated to thread a fresh binding-wire through the holes in the fingers 58 and the grooves in the wiper plates. For this operation a flexible shaft drives a shaft 276, Fig. 11, first in one direction and then in the opposite. The shaft 276 carries a pinion 274, which drives a frictionally-held pinion 224 and also a pinion 236 splined to a shaft 238 screw-threaded into its bearing and having at its lower end a clutch member 242. The pinion 224 gears with a rack 226 and moves a carriage 220, on which these pinions and shafts are mounted, to and from one of the tackers. When the clutch member 242 has descended sufficiently to engage a co-operating member 244, a wire-feeding roll 256 draws wire from a reel 262 till a cam 254 separates the mem. bers 242, 244. The first opposite rotation of the shaft 276 causes a cam 272 to depress a plunger 270, oscillating a notched cutter 264 to sever the binder. Continued rotation of the shaft 276 returns the carriage 220 to normal position. Specifications 18163/09 and 18270/09 also are referred to.
