173,653. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Oct. 28, 1920. Detecting faults in insulation.- Relates to a device for indicating the presence of moisture in electric transformer oil, of the kind comprising a hygroscopic element, which is a non-conductor in the dry state, electric conductors connected thereto, and means for indicating the passing of current when the element absorbs moisture and becomes conducting. The hygroscopic element 5, which may consist of plaster of paris &c. or of blotting-paper impregnated with sodium chloride, calcium chloride, &c., has embedded in it conductors 6, 7 with terminals 8, 9, and is contained in a tube 1 closed at the upper end 2, the lower end being closed by a screw plug after insertion of the hygroscopic element; perforations are formed in the sides of the tube 1 to allow access of the oil under test. A conducting state of the element 5 due to moisture is indicated by an alarm connected to the terminals 8, 9. The device may be packed in oil in an. air-tight and moisture-proof container with a screw cap adapted to receive the terminals.
