' Tools for setting-out work.-Relates to surface gauges of the kind provided with an adjustable graduated scale having two columns of figures the zero points of which lie at different parts of the scale and consists in arranging the figures of one column inversely to those in the other column. The graduated bar A slides in a groove in the column B of the gauge, the base B<1> of which is out away to allow the bar to pass through if necessary. The tracer-holder F slides on the column B by means of a guide f<2> at right angles to the holder F and accommodates a prismatic tracer J, the point of which is in the plane of the lower face of the prism, which face is parallel to the base. The bar A may be provided with several zeros, two being shown, the numerals from the zeros reading along different vertical lines. A guide C embracing the column B at the top may be moved by a screw D, and is provided with a screw clamp E, to clamp the bar A, to the guide C. To use the instrument on work with one plane face, this face is placed on the surfaceplate, together with the gauge. The bar A is unclamped at E and moved until a " zero " end touches the surface-plate, when it is clamped at E. The tracer-holder is now moved on the column B until the height, taken from a drawing, of the zero-plane is reached, when the holder is clamped to the column and the work scribed at this plane. The bar A is next adjusted first by hand, and then by the screw D until a zero registers with the zero of the vernier f<2>. The screw E is then clamped, and the tracer holder is adjusted to a dimension, again taken from the drawing, the work being scribed at this new height.
