Abstract

170,389. Jackson, M. B. July 19, 1920. Lathes; lathe drivers.-In a machine for turning broom and like handles, square blanks are piled between pairs of pillars'12, Fig. 1, on a plate 11<a>, which is adjustably mounted on the bed 10 of the machine. The lowest blank is fed between two conical feed-wheels 13, the superincumbent blanks being lifted by hooks 82, 81, pivoted to the posts 12 and connected by a rod 83. The tail 80 of the hook 81 is rocked by a cam 78 en a rotating shaft 77. The two rollers 13 are geared together, and the spindle of one of them carries a belt-driven pulley 16. The blank passes beneath a spring-pressed roller mounted in brackets 23, and through flaring guides 27, rotatably mounted in brackets 28, to a tube 30, Figs. 1 and 6, mounted in brackets 29 and rotated by a belt pulley 2. The tube 30 is fitted at its forward end with a bush 27<a> having a star-shaped bore, which engages the square blank and rotates it. A spindle 35, driven bv a belt, and at an angle to the bed of the machine, carries, side by side, a saw 42 which cuts a helical groove in the blank, and a cutter which trims it. The spindle 35 is carried by a lever 32, pivoted at 33 to lugs on the brackets 29, and attached at its other end to an adjusting-rod 37. The work then passes through a threaded bush 49, carried by a watercooled bracket 44, to a rotating sleeve mounted in a bracket 53, Figs. 1 and 8, which is provided with a driving-bush similar to the bush 27a, Fig. 6. A finishing-cutter 59 is mounted on a beltdriven spindle, carried by a frame 57, which is pivoted at 58 to extensions of the bracket 53. The outer end of the frame 57 is formed with recesses 64, engaged by a pin at the end of a rod 66, fitted with a screw shackle 4, and operated by a cam 68 on a spindle 69. The cam moves the cutter 59 to form a portion of reduced diameter at one end of the broom handle. The spindle 69 is driven through gearing 70, 71, 73, 74 from a spindle 75, which is driven by a belt from the tube 30. The work is withdrawn from the machine by wheels 86 mounted on inclined spindles 88; these carry toothed wheels 89 geared together by a chain. One spindle 88 is driven through gearing from a belt-driven spindle 93.
